CINEMA IN BANGKOK
Dozens of movie theatres around town show Thai, Chinese, Indian and western
movies. The majority of films shown are comedies and shoot-em-ups, with
the occasional drama slipping through. These theatres are air-con and
quite comfortable, with reasonable rates (40B to 1OOB). All movies in
Thai theatres are preceded by the Thai royal anthem. Everyone in the theatre
is expected to stand respectfully for the duration of the anthem.
Movie ads
appear daily in both The Nation and the Bangkok Post, listings in The
Nation include addresses and program times. Bangkok Metro magazine will
carry details of film festivals or other special events when they are
scheduled.
Foreign films am often altered before distribution by Thailand's
board of censors; usually this involves obscuring nude sequences, although
gun fights are sometimes also edited from the film. Film buffs may prefer the weekly or twice weekly offerings at Bangkok's
foreign cultural clubs. French and German films screened at the cultural
clubs are almost always subtitled in English. Admission is sometimes free,
sometimes 30B to 40B. For addresses and phone numbers see the Cultural
Centres section in this chapter.
